Personal Response
Throughout the story the unidentified Irish sniper is perceived as fighting for what he believes in, to free Ireland from English rule even if it means he must sacrifice the lives of his own people in order to do so. I did not bond with him as a character and was horrified as he committed brutal acts of murder without demonstrating any remorse or pity for his victims, especially after he shot dead the unarmed old woman. It was not until the sniper’s immediate physical and emotional reaction to killing the other sniper when he shows his regret for having to fight “an Irish brother in arms” that I could accept his motives.
